Burn

Written: May 27, 2024, For Robert James Liguori Contest, Inspired From Glenn Hughes Song " Burn" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The sky spills scarlet, a burning stain, Even after midnight, ghosts remain. Shouts of oblivion and a lady's name, A swell of her palm burns a voracious flame. The city is burning, a blaze at night, Her inferno evolves, a frightening sight. We labeled her as coarse and dissed her claim, Ignorance of the reality intensified the flame. Devil egg yolks, they dissed, an awful deceit, Her envious says ripped a tear in the peat. Wrath you all, she said, that you'll not learn, My departure bars any hope for a return. They chuckled, ignoring the sarcastic refrain, Until she whispered, Burn!, and shared her pain. The ground trembled, a warning unheard, We were transfixed, by the horrible word. There is no time to leave, no way of escape, The inferno's outrage is a merciless drape. There's not much time for prayer or despair The fire devastated it without compare.

This is such a wonderfully constructed poem and very emotional too at that. I enjoyed reading it. I’m glad I was able to place you high in the contest.

Great choice for the contest.. This s a powerful and evocative portrayal of destruction and despair in the face of a raging fire. Through vivid imagery, personification, and symbolism, the poet explores themes of ignorance, arrogance, and retribution. The poem serves as a stark warning against the consequences of neglecting warnings and dismissing the concerns of others, leaving the reader with a haunting reminder of the fragility of human civilization in the face of natural forces.

Dear Sotto, Your poem captivated me from the first line to the last with its haunting narrative. How you blend elements of fire, darkness, and human emotion creates a palpable sense of tension and urgency. I love how your words confront the consequences of ignorance and arrogance, highlighting the destructive power of neglecting reality. Your ability to evoke such strong emotions and provoke deep reflection is truly commendable. - Blessings, My Friend, Daniel

SP, after the end of the song Glenn Hughes says that there is no hate in his life and love is the answer. So, I take your poem as a warning to what can happen if we don't follow those precepts. Thanks for this one.

Beautiful couplets, with great metaphoric use. I am not a fan of Hughes, but you did a wonderful take on his song. Best for a win.

Highly emotive poem, my friend. Woven in fierce words, it delivers on the contest prompt: They chuckled, ignoring the sarcastic refrain, Until she whispered, Burn!, and shared her pain. The ground trembled, a warning unheard---
