Painting by Luc Boivin

A happy circus, life was then;
bring on those dancing bears,
like ones I used to hold with love
while saying nighttime prayers.
Or if bad dreams would wake me up,
bear hugs would calm me down
with confidence that made me feel
secure in my nightgown.
A happy circus, life was then;
bring on those dancing bears,
as they skipped in to take their place
on tea-time party chairs.
As I, with a sweet friend, would sit
besides our special one,
and pour some tea, just make-believe;
share bear hugs when all done.
Or just like Goldilocks, we'd play;
bring on those dancing bears.
Enjoy their porridge, chairs, and beds
without foreboding cares.
Wish, like a circus, life could be,
as was when I was small;
when grizzly bears and bear hugs were...
no way, monstrous at all.
