Bookmarks

Charities in search of cash
Send envelopes with pleas
And sometimes little gifts in hopes
My giving gene they’ll squeeze.

Most often it’s a sheet or two
Of labels with my name
And street address, but in addition,
Bookmarks sometimes came.

I use the labels less and less
As bills are paid online
And bookmarks to the pile
Of things passé I must consign.

Enticements might encourage
A donation, that is true,
But what once worked no longer is
Appealing to accrue.

I agree... We are going to need changes. I love the address labels... the bookmarks I place in books... I give away... In three years that has been nearly 11k books... So they have gone far... from the jar on the table... I would say. Cast them off and let them go... to have others enjoy... Your poem is well written as always... lovely. Ann

Very true, Ilene. Do you ever get checks for $2.50 to cash? I do, from organizations like USO, Disabled Vets. Some stash 'em. I cash 'em. Smiles, Gershon

as if the landfills don't already have enough waste to manage... i love your commentary not only on the practices of fundraisers, but on our shifting cultural habits of mailing and reading, very thought-provoking

They must waste so much money sending all that out, they'd have a lot more money for their charity if they didn't. Tom

Oh, I'm so glad to see it's not just me that gets those things. I have a file folder full of address labels...mostly unused. Love this one, Ilene.

Ah, how neat and clever, Ilene. I couldn't agree more. All of these things feed my wastebasket!

The grands do find the stickers grand; Though they affix to things unplanned. I do find all these mailings strange; Remove my name and keep the change!
