Book Ends
My spine may be broken
My binding unbound
I hold truth, lies and knowledge
While making nary a sound
I can be heard in your head
Without saying a word
I'm a key to the lock
I've opened many a door
I can be held in your hand
And hold different meanings to each
I remain in the dark
Until you open me
I will show you the truth
Or allow you to pretend
I encompass it all
Within my book ends
My pages may yellow
From years of hard use
The more worn the more loved
It's not due to abuse
I can be adorned with a ribbon
And to my owner I'm prized
To help mark the spot
That comforts my heart through my eyes
So pass me on down
To your family or friend
So they may continue the joy
Held within my book ends
