Birth Ii

Sultry San Francisco September
     enveloped hours of labor.
Hot, searing waves of pain
     moved around and down
My mound of naked flesh
pushing as a tide with no ebb.

Into the dank, dark North Beach hotel room
came two men dressed in white,
Blurred in their motions of haste
     by my sweat-filled eyes.
My nakedness was covered by a cool white sheet
     floating down with a caress.

Three flights of stairs met us
as they carried the stretcher down
Out into the concrete furnace of Indian summer.
     Tourists standing staring watched
My mouth open in a triumphant scream:
"The Baby ... the baby is coming!"

Moments later, siren sounds filled my mind
as his body brought the crowning.
