Betrayed
The Statue of Liberty frowned
At the helpless cries around,
Then turned and looked with hate
At the growing fascist state.
Her torch she threw in the sea,
Then walked up into a cloud.
"Where is she? Where can she be?"
All the people howled.
"We are betrayed," said some,
"She's failed us in her duty----
To stand still like the sun
And bless us for our beauty."
The tourists spat their doubt,
And yet, they paid the fee
To ride a boat all about
And camera lost liberty.
