Bernie You Be Careful

Vinny Rogers was a dairy man who milked three hundred cows.
Share farming with his son Bernie who put in the milking hours.
Now Bernie was adventurous; he liked his teenage fun.
He owned a car; paid off a boat - he also brought himself a gun.
Bernie you be careful
when you’re loading up that gun.
You've got to know your distance
and what damage can be done.

This gun was something special; more power than a three-o-three.
The bullets were more piercing said the spiel that he showed me.
The bore was mighty larger than his old twenty-two -
Bernie scanned the paddocks to see what this gun could do.
Bernie you be careful
when you’re loading up that gun.
You've got to know your distance
and what damage can be done.

Well it wasn't very long before, his first kill he's going to boast,
when he took aim at a crow that sat upon a corner post -
the bullet fired; the gun recoiled, and the crow is spun around.
Bernie heard the bellow from beyond - and saw their Friesian bull go down.
Bernie you be careful
when you’re loading up that gun.
You've got to know your distance
and what damage can be done.

It's probably safe to say that Bernie hit the bull's eye (nothing to crow about). I can still hear my father saying "Paul, you be careful with that BB gun." Delightful poem, Lindsay. Hugs, Paul

Hello Paul ... this is a true story told to me by Bernie. He said his new gun was taken off him. Can't work out why - thank you Paul - Lindsay

I like the poem. It's unique, re guns. We humans seem to have a penchant to kill one another. And I don't mean by guns, alone. Stabbings, running over crowds at Christmas bazaars. Blowing up people on buses. Setting people on fire, too. No end to human craziness. In the USA, the PD may not get to you in time. You may end up, quite dead. Hunting is a sport, too. Not my thing, but I am for others freedom,

G'day Panagiota … You are certainly correct Panagiota. Not a day goes by without reports of killings on the news. I don't like being around guns as too many accidents occur too. This lyric depicts this and it really did happen - thank you Panagiota - Lindsay

I have to agree with Janice on this. There are just way too many Bernies in this world. Poor Bull! Too many people get a gun and can't wait to kill something. Great write. God Bless, JB

Hello Judy … my thinking is similar to yours. I just don't know why individuals want to own so many guns. Thank you for reading and commenting Judy - Lindsay

G'day Janice … thank you once again Janice. Most down here cannot understand the US gun laws. However, there must be some reason for allowing citizens to own high powered repeating rifles - I cringe when I read of mass shootings - Lindsay

Hello M. L. … yes M. L., I'd advise you to keep out of Bernie's sights. Guns and I don't get along so I wouldn't be there either - Thank you M. L. - Lindsay

G'day Rico … that's right; no bull, and Bernie's parents were not impressed with him literally hitting two birds with one stone - thanks Rico - Lindsay

G'day Timothy … I can't imagine Bernie winning a popularity contest at home for quite some time. Bulls are very expensive to replace, especially on dairy farms - thanks Timothy - Lindsay

I guess you'd have to call Bernie's shot a 'Bullseye,' eh?! Ride easy, partner, Gershon

I can imagine the bullet going straight through the crow and hitting the bull. This would make a great song Lindsay. You are such a fantastic story teller. I loved this! This is a Fave for me! Mahalo, Connie : ) xxoo

Hello Connie … this is an absolute factual happening. I was working with Bernie when he told me his mistake. The gun never came again for a while. Thank you once again Connie for your support - Lindsay
