Being Bullied

Sometimes we all say things we don’t mean Private thoughts to be kept inside that should never be seen Then others join to be part of the scene Using nasty words that are designed to demean Scared to speak out for fear of ridicule How can other people be so cruel They join in because they think its fun Not knowing the harm they do to anyone Social media can be fun But to those being bullied the damage is done ‘Do it, do it, just go away’ These are the words the bullies may say Until one day the victim begins to crack Those poisoned words can’t be taken back Evntually they can take no more And are found lifeless on the bedroom floor Then those who mock and those who scorn Turn up at the funeral of those who they now mourn So think before another word you say Because the bullied may not be able to face another day Edited for Premier Contest #7 Sponsored by Skat A 2/2/14 Inspired by the death Caitlin Alker (aged 18) who was bullied on social media and tragically took her own life.

Bullying is very common, and it can have negative lasting effects on the 'victims'. This is a powerful poem, Jan....glad you entered it for this contest for I missed it before since I had not as yet joined Soup! ~ Congrats on this fine win. Hugs // paul

There is much wisdom shared in your poem, Jan. It helps to notice and stand up for those who get picked on. We never know the consequence or the toll it takes to be bullied.

Hi Jan! The saddest part is that bullies can't forsee the consequences of their actions. It has resulted in so many deaths in our country, too. Beautifully expressed! Love, Balveen

These deaths are so tragic Balveen but sadly the bullying continues - too late for sorry when someone commits suicide - it must be so hard to live with if you were one of the people who was acting as a bully :-( hugs jan xx

Hi Jan, I have been very moved by your poem, I was bullied for the past 2 years and i've decided to do an EPQ project around the topic of bullying to raise awareness...which involves writing a song. I hope this would be okay but I'd love to use your poem for the lyrics. I could really appreciate it if you could tell me some of the inspiration behind writing this poem, and an insight to why you have used certain words, how you created a certain atmosphere etc. Please write back! Amber xx

Oh... I know the feeling all too well... and I'm so glad I read this poem today :) its true, people say all sorts of nasty things to their peers and those younger than them, and when something drastic happens, all the remorse in the world cannot get them back... :( but great write :)

Hi John Thank you for such awesome feedback! My poem is written after reading about a local lass of 18 who killed herself after bullying on facebook. The poem is now being used in my local senior school so I feel I have achieved great impact with my work - its only the third poem I have written. Hugs and happy writing Jan xx

This I very strong..We are losing way to many of our youth to this. I am happy that there is a push in the schools to stop bullying but they can't stop it outside their walls. We as parents must step up and take responsibility we our childrens actions....Sorry I vented a tad....Nice inspiring piece Jan...Hugs Tim

Hi Tim Thank you so much for you kind words. I have only been writing poems since November last year and its so lovely to have feedback on the work. This is only the second poem I'd written and was based on a young lass here who took here own life aged 18 after fb bullying. If it makes people think then it was well worth putting onto paper Jan xx
