Beginning and Ending

Beginning and Ending

By Elton Camp

Robert as a child, was usually lonely
The friends he had were in name only

Boy didn’t know what he did wrong
But, with others, didn’t quite belong

He was uncertain what he should do
“We don’t want to play with you.”

On steps of his house he sat and cried
Each day, a tiny bit of Robert died

In school, Robert did reasonably well
Although in social skills didn’t excel

At sports, he didn’t very well compete
Was ignored by the girls he did meet

Business success brought him a wife
And two kids, his chief delight in life

Marriage didn’t last long, of course
She wanted money and a divorce

“I’m sorry, but I don’t love you anymore”
Then poor Robert was alone as before

His children she turned against him
Life, again, became exceedingly grim

In old age, Robert again sits alone
Any reason for living is long gone

And there is a pistol lying at his side
It’s the only solution he hasn’t tried
