I will turn to see the sky
touch the grass and wonder why
walk the mountain trail again
splash the cold against my face
feel the burly bark of brethren pine
upon a wintry shine of one more snow
before I go
wade waist deep in summer hay
and play all day
roll down hills and step on stones
across a creek to
peek into the earth beneath
a rock
and disregard the clock
spring upon the fence
as birds alight to lofty branch
and take a chance or dare
cast my fate into the wind
without a care
before I go
I will touch my nose
to every flower
and for an hour
I will contemplate
the stars
catch lightning bugs
and moonbeams in
my mother’s pickle jars
and I will run
into my life
deep into each rising sun
touch and taste and hear and see
all this world has given me
before I go
