Bed and Beyond

Dropped my sandals,
got on the bed.
Tucked myself in,
curled my legs —
that’s how I usually sleep.

But today, of all days,
I leave a space.
Just enough
to fit one more soul.

Can I do that though?
Wish for more?

Isn’t that what they always say —
"Stretch your legs only as far as your bed?"

My thoughts conflict with reality.
The space beside me grows heavy.
Someone’s here.
Someone’s sat.

A presence I already know.
The sheets turn mildly warm.
Familiar hands tuck my hair behind my ear,
hold my hips,
pull me near.

A gentle kiss lands on my forehead.
And slowly,
my legs begin to extend
beyond the length of the bed.
