Notes About The Poem

8/18/2026 for Beautiful Words Are Here ! Poetry Contest sponsored by Nette Onclaud

Becoming

I'd been laid low. I'd been let down.
I came to this blue lagoon to drown
and settle into the silt -
when the calliopean lilt
of a nymph in diaphanous gown -

a heavenly harbinger of hope,
an effervescent means to cope,
with a tune, so sweetly humming,
revealed a means of becoming -
might my muse and me, elope?

Calliopean lilt??!! My, my, we are fancy-shmancy tonight. You may have just invented 'circusular reasoning,' unless Mary Go-Round beat you to it... I see why Shakespeare is so jealous. lol. ~ Gershon

OK, so here's my rationale, which I just invented. I change my language in the middle of the first stanza to match my change of circumstances in line 4. I wish I coulda come up with this stuff in college. otherwise, I wouldn't have had to avoid all the classes involved in writing and be a math major... but wait, I like math. 3:30 is too late.

Haha, I followed CayCay's suggestion and put on some ruffles and a feathered cap. I didn't know whether I should put on the pointy elf-like shoes, but I also gave that a try. It shows, eh? What I think is funny, or maybe, not quite right about this one, is that the first two lines sound like I'm trying to write blues or rock and roll lyrics so I can audition for your band and make a million dollars, and then somewhere around line 3 or 4, I start my fancy stuff, trying to dribble behind my back, and hopefully, not throwing it out of bounds, wait am I mixing metaphors, anyway, I'm mostly consistent after that, but not quite, not really. If you cancel that 3:30 appointment let me know. I think I might need that slot.

I like this, very imaginative. There are angst, beauty and depth in your imagery leading to a kicker ending. CayCay
