Beats Me

To count, uphold the beauty of the form, Or to depart, defying honored norms? To contact ground with regular impacts Or syncopate one's way off beaten tracks. The bard, in famed soliloquy, departs; To be, or not to be constrained, these arts? For I am bickered, battered, torn and worse: A muse abused or joyful freed in verse?

Iambic pentameter is the natural meter to the English language and German. Much of "modern" verse is ridding itself of it, sadly. Free verse is replacing it. Proper free verse is not easy to write, however. T.S. Eliot is not a favorite poet but he writes great examples of free verse. I especially enjoy reading his "Four Quartets." Exceptional little poem with much meaning and much to ponder. Loved your allusions to the Bard. Good writing, Jeff. Nice rhymes, too. Not many people can write in iambic pentameter these days, it seems.

A very nice little poem. You stuck to the style perfectly. I really like the " To be, or not to be" line, very Shakespearian of you.
