The victory of a few hundred religious Jews over the army of the mighty Greek Empire is not what Chanukka celebrates.  Rather, the holday commemorates the subsequent rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem, and specifically the miracle of the Menorah Lamp stayng lit for eight days and nights from a one-day's supply (cruse) of oil.?

"Who is like unto You, O Lord?" The Maccabees' battle cry For the sake of God They were willing to die Their holiday's name is Chanukah Which is translated as 'dedication' The Temple's Lamp's restoration with a cruse of pure olive oil celebrated by lsrael's nation No marches or military celebrations ~ Light is what ignites Jewish education

Happy Chanukah from the Lower East Side. The victory is a large part of the celebration I think. I will light my menorah - as always. Went to a reform shul tonight for Shabbat. Nice service!! B'Shalom Matthew Anish
