Backwater
(“Without a Doubt”, 2013, original oil)
When I was 22 I left the mainstream
Moved into the hills to build a home
And live a life in the backwater.
Now 45 years later
It’s more backwater than ever.
My main companions are my dogs
And wife, all of whom enjoy this lifestyle
Of disengagement.
Meanwhile I know the world keeps turning
And the mainstream flowing,
Pretty hard to ignore the distant roar of that,
But here in the backwater life goes on
Much as it has from the beginning of time,
Except now we have access to fine books
Wine and whisky, vehicles to get us into the outback
And TV portals to view what the better half
Is doing with their precious time
Time which equally slips away
Whether you’re in the mainstream
Or backwater.
