Baby Steps

Baby Steps
David J Walker

Don’t stray too far
Stay where you can hear
Me call

And that all
Mother said as she 
watched me  
take my first baby steps

And was out the door 
A young man, 
Off to war

Before she could think of 
Anything else to say
On the very first morning of the
Very first today on my own

And as I returned home
With a baby and a young lady 
Of my own

She smiled 
	A mothers smile
That only she could 
Have known
