Awakening

Lost and inappropriate,
my lips spoke trivialities,
my hapless heart was inarticulate.
Fearfully I fumbled through
my hazy days, spoiling opportunities,
urgently hoping they wouldn't pick me.
A wraith within a wraith, I flittered by
commitment like a man without a plan;
I only knew the pleasures of denial,
'til I was pushed into the present by
a crushing ultimatum, compelling me
to find my way alone, now I greet
each morning with a smile!

I really liked this one. But, somehow, I'm lost at the very end. What happened between finding your way alone and being able to greet each morning with a smile. What was the revelation that brought this about? What was the ultimatum? Rockman

The ultimatum was the divorce demanded by my ex-wife.
