Average Day

Average day
We get up in the morning
We have breakfast but don't talk
Leaving for work, hesitating, looking for a reason to say goodbye

Work is sometimes busy
People yelling, the stacks of paper seem endless
Other times there is nothing to do
We joke quietly, reading the news
I sneak off to the fire escape
Standing 200 feet up I pull in the putrid city smell
At five we get up and say our goodbyes
The last words we will speak for the day

the hour drive home is slow, there really is no hurry
There are no hugs or kisses waiting
Quietly I walk in, so as not to disturb myself
