At My Feet

As soon as I sit
There’s a bird at my feet,
Just checking to see
If I’ve something to eat.

I don’t feed the pigeons
Or sparrows I see.
The crumbs that they want
Come from others, not me.

They soon figure out
That no treats I’ll supply,
So a couple of pecks,
And they take to the sky.

I’ll give them some credit
For trying, at least.
Each person who sits
Holds a possible feast.

Reminds me of those
Who play Lotto each week.
They never give up
As their fortune they seek.

The odds are the same
As the pigeons who’ve been
Thinking one of these days
They will certainly win!

LOL...I can see the comparison. LOL I like how lotto players peck at the play screens and tickets in the stores. Great comparison Ilene. Trevor

An optimistic bird for sure; reminds me of my dog who sits next to my husband, waiting. She knows better than to sit by me; I never "share". Nicely penned.

This happened to me some years ago when I was sitting in our local park. A grackle cautiously approached my white sneakers to see if it was food or edible. It wasn't and flew off.It was the way it cocked his iridescent head now right, now left that made me laugh. / Maurice

the odds of getting hit by lighting on the way to buying a lottery ticket are higher than those of winning the lottery. great writing, as always!
