Notes About The Poem

Love is not just a word, it is life itself.

As I Lie Awake Beside You

As I Lie Awake Beside You
(with love to Barbara)

As I lie awake beside you
And I breathe each breath you take
I thank God that you're still with me
And of the memories we'll make

Of the times we've shared in life
That our love has brought us through
While looking forward to the future
And the things still left to do

We have always worked together
For “US” to rise above the fray
We've contended with all comers
As we're doing still today

We will bear the weight together
Through our love that never fails
Always reaching out and sharing
Always balancing the scales

Never think you are a bother
Through the hurdles left to tame
It's hardly ever fifty fifty
That's how we've always played the game

Our marriage has been give and take
Through our fifty years and more
If we could live forever
I'd never even out the score

Believe I'll always love you
I'm here for you for every fight
I look forward to our kisses
When we go to bed at night
