Artist: Van Gogh

Dutch upbringing, melancholic
Suffered love’s rejection throes
On the verge of deep frustration
Fought the waves of mental woes.

Painted orchards, blossoms, landscapes
Where sunflowers reigned supreme
Bold the colours and rough beauty
A post-impressionist dream.

Vivid rushes of emotion
With concision, grace, displayed
The dramatic, the spiritual
Vibrant strokes on canvas laid.

Life aborted, sad conclusion
Was it peace or hand of shame?
Only then he was acknowledged
To immortal heights of fame.

Many thanks Robo! I believe that community building is important to keep the site alive. In the process my poetry writing suffers because time becomes limited! All those who post poems here do so with the hope that somebody reads them; unfortunately too many poems are being posted, thus a lot go to waste. Thanks for your visit:) ... and for the 7 rating // paul

It is the story of art. Generation after generation. The artist must shock. Or the artist must die. Before he is recognized. Of course, in Van Gogh's case he did both, with the severing of his ear. I have read your wonderful poem many times, Paul, and as always your rhythm and rhyme are flawless. You portray meaning imagery and depth all while maintaining the demands of the meter you have chosen. I admire that greatly. I will continue to drop in on you from time to time to read your work.Sam

Very nice write, sir. Van Gogh was an admirable painter & LETTER-WRITER. I've read English translations of some letters which are very interesting. I wish I could read 'em in their original lang: DUTCH! (Although I think he wrote couple in other languages too.)

Vincent is my favorite Painter. His paintings of feet, and shoes are some of the best in my opinion. A powerful man who lived his life as though vivid texture was the meaning to everything. You honor this great Man very well with your sympathetic poem Paul. Bravo! J.A.B.

Im not that much familiar with how he is but your poem made me read his history :D his paintings and his name are that familiar with me ..:) but I admire him in the sense that though he suffered he didn't stop to do much more of his talent.. His life might have that too sad but his paintings tell otherwise.. Descriptive words as always :) God bless us all Paul..:)

Dear Paul, There was really no lasting peace in Van Gogh's life. Sad really, that he didn't achieve great fame during his lifetime. I love his work so much that I named two cats after him. LOL Please keep both ears and a pen handy when inspiration comes. Love and blessings for a happy Easter weekend, Carolyn

It's true Carolyn, very sad that he never achieved 'fame' in life; I presumed that he attained 'peace' once he left a world which was not very kind to him. [pen & paper...never without:)] Easter is now here...rejoice! :) // paul
