Appreciation

I liked the idea of you,
the idea of growing old
The never ending laughter,
applying your jacket over me when I’m cold.
I loved the feeling of waking up next to you
Our bodies intertwined
The warmth of your skin
Me being yours and you being mine.
I enjoyed the quiet nights
Laying about
Telling each other our fears
And letting everything come out.
I liked the thought of you being my warm and safe home
But I think the reason why I liked you so much
Is because you never left me alone
So I’ll tell you this now & I think it’s about time
If you ask me my least favorite thing about you
It’s that you barely kept me alive
I wasn’t able to learn or to evolve
I wasn’t able to become a person with my own terrible thoughts.
Hopefully by now you know
That I am not afraid
 to speak my own truth
my very favorite thing
 is not being with you.

A very thought-provoking poem, Mary, touching on the conflict of emotions that often arise in relationships. Can we truly evolve as individuals when in a close relationship? Something I've found tricky in the past. Thank you for a poem that stays with you long after reading.
