Another time and Place

I saw her home, so splendid
                                                  sofa cushions all in place
No messy crumb nor any spill,
                                                  A tidy desk, a poet's quill
                                               Quiet order, each her space

                                              I mused "Oh someday, someday!
                                                  My poet's heart will pour.
                                               My home shining and perfect,
                                                 No handprints on the door!
                                                   Quiet order in my place."

The years passed by so quickly
                                                     Shining is my floor
Not a nary toy in sight
No in n' out the door
                                                  Quietly, I feel displaced

I went to visit my old friend
                                               I knocked upon her door
                                              Another woman answered
                                            Poetess? Lived there no more
                                              Peeking out beside her, a
                                             Sweet and sticky little face

                                          The woman seemed quite eager
To make a friend of me
She said that she would ask me
In, but her home was quite messy
                                           Startled, I could see myself
                                            In another time and space

                                          I knew she needed friendship
At the door we talked a while
I told her to come visit me,
                                          Then departed with a smile
                                             My address in her hand
                                                A smile on her face

To my surprise, she came one day
Her sweet tots by her side
My clean front door was opened
                                            And, it was open wide
                                      She commented on the tidiness
                                       Softly touched curtains of lace

She said "Your home is splendid!
Your sofa cushions all in place!
No crumb nor spill, no toy.
A tidy desk, and poets quill?
                                        Perfect order, every space!"

                                 She mused "Oh someday, someday!
                                        My poet's heart will pour!
                                     My home shining and perfect,
                                      No handprints on the door!
                                        Quiet order in my place!"

                                   I answered, "Yes, too quickly."
My gaze downcast toward the floor
Then something funny caught my sight
                                   Handprints on my entry door
Her tots had found my ink pad
                                  Their mom felt quite disgraced

                                        A heavy burden lifted
Then I laughed until I cried
                                   "It's quite alright, no worries!"
I wiped my happy tears and sighed
I brought out tea and cookies
For her kids and new friend Grace

The years pass by too quickly
                                         Shining is loves gift
                                      Children are a blessing
                                    My friend my heart uplifts
                                    I'd rather enjoy happiness
Children make a joy filled place!

Life's a lot more than shiny floors
                                     Invite joy and friends
                                 Through those front doors!

how nice...I sometimes get caught up with the "clean" thing...but I would accept the prints of anyone who visits. I love company. Thanks for the poem and reminder.

I could relate to this and completely agree. When my son was small my house was messy. Now it is orderly. Sometime when I see house with kids that is orderly, it surprises me, no toys, books, clothes lying here and there, no marks in walls and doors... They must be strict surely or cleaning non stop. Wonderful write friend!

Oh yes, I feel the same way...too tidy may be too strict. My mom's house was tidy to a capital T but I didn't have a very joyful time of it...she said she had "Eyes in the back of her head." She saw every single mess and said "Cleanliness is next to Godliness!" BTW I was surprised that isn't in the Bible, lol! I'm not talking about a filthy total wreck of course, that's not good at all, but a bit messy is a lot normal with busy happy little kids!

Thank you Vijay! Sometimes I think we allow limits on our friendships through our differences in age, or maybe places of worship, whatever...., there seems to be invisible walls that we let get in our way. Sometimes fate has a way of placing doors through those walls for us! Friends are a wonderful blessing <3 The young bless the old, and vice versa!
