And Know But Peace

And Know But Peace
By Roy Merritt

Days unending the sun always shines
We all wishing for darkness in decline
And how could this be why this of late
Has heaven turned on us is this man’s fate

No stars can be seen no birds that fly
The heat unending and boiling the sky
And down here below where man resides
Helpless he be as compatriots die

Where are the stars where is the moon
Something’s amiss and out of tune
Something’s amiss something’s askew
We’re helpless here and soon we’re through

The desert encroaches no plants survive
little water about to keep us alive
No shelter denies it no humble abode
No entreaties to god to ease our load

For earth it seems has changed its course
Its orbit altered by mysterious force
And closer it moves toward that light
That used to at time give way to night

Toward that light responsible for life
But punishes now and give but strife
And soon enough on its advance
We doomed for certain have no chance

The inferno closer with heat does lash
And soon all about will dissolve to ash
And all will be gone and our misery cease
And at last be nothing and know but peace

At last be nothing and know but peace
At last be nothing and know but peace
