An Uplifting Feeling

Two black backed gulls returning gathering twigs they build their nest haphazardly placed on a concrete ledge protecting eggs from thieves and vermin Watching her patiently sit, she waits for her precious brood to arrive in rain and fog and cold and sun her warmth stirs the life she creates Just before dawn at the end of the night I spy three babies before me fluffy, spotty, adorable chicks uplifting my soul, my heart fills with delight Written 31st May 2019 5th PLACE Contest: An Uplifting Feeling - Bookend Rhymes Sponsor: Line Gauthier Contest Name STRAND no 650 Sponsor Brian Strand Honorabe Mention

Hi Ann: This is a delightful poem of which I can relate. For many years , I had an awning over my window with enough room to build a nest. Each year the house finches would come and build a nest where the chicks would eventually come and go when they became mature. I never tired of watching them. You evoked a lot of memories and I wish you well in the contest.

Going back over some poems I have noticed I did not reply to your beautiful tale about your finches, so thank you Ralph , as you say we never tire of watching nature so close at hand and it always seems such a privilege to be able to witness new life. Thanking you for your lovely comments Ralph. With kindest thoughts Ann xx

I'm sure you feel like a mother hen observing and protecting this brood ... I felt the same when I had blue tits in my nesting box always alert to the danger of the local tom cat! good luck in the contest:-) hugs Jan xx

I must have had a senior moment on this day Jan, as yours is the second message I forgot to respond to, so thank you so much. Yes that is exactly how I feel and how delightful to see those tiny blue tits emerging from their nesting box - magical! With kindest thoughts Ann xx

Thank you dear Panagiota for your lovely comment, so glad you enjoyed my poem and now like an expectant Mum I await the arrival of those dear sweet chicks. At the moment the female is on the nest and several times a day I watch through my binoculars - fascinating ... With kindest thoughts Ann xx

Thank you for your welcome visit Heidi and I hope you are well. So glad you liked my poem, as this is inspired by the gulls nesting last year just below my penthouse balcony, and to my utter joy they have returned again this year. So at the moment I wait patiently for the eggs to hatch! With kindest thoughts Ann xx

Yes I am so lucky Maureen to witness nature at such close range. They are nesting just below my balcony and last year I watched the young chicks grow and eventually fledge from my roof - I was on a high all day! So imagine my joy when the gulls returned again a week ago to the same spot! So glad you enjoyed my poem Maureen and I will send you a progress report, Haha. With kindest thoughts Ann xx
