An Old Graveyard

As l stroll through an old graveyard On a overcast drizzly day I drift back in time To million miles away Mesmerised by the headstones I contemplate lives gone by Who were they, who loved them How did they die? The profound silence within the graveyard engulfs me The solitude yields inner peace I feel a sense of spiritual calm As if all fear has been released I wander the graveyard oblivious of time In a world of the unknown A world of lives gone by A life …now just words on a headstone

This one of yours in particular speaks to me. As I've written on the same subject to myself many times, seldom does anyone put true human value to what is lost amongst those headstones. It warms my heart the way that you've portrayed the value of the knowledge those stones display. With comfort and comforted A.S.

We have a family cemetery, and it is comforting to walk among our ancestors. There is so much history written on those headstones. Thank you Deb for this wonderful poem.

Hey Jerry….is the cemetery on your family property? The headstones are full of history of who they were! Thankyou Jerry for your lovely comment! Debx

I too have written a few poems on grave yards. The silence there is equally frightening and calming. Seeing the headstones, we often wonder who they have been. Well composed, dear Deb.

John and I take flowers every Saturday afternoon for our son, David. It is a peaceful place facing the sea, surrounded by fields where cattle graze. We all miss him more than words can say. We always talk about him, and he is never far from my mind. I feel his presence everywhere. Take care, Deb XX

If only the gravestones could talk - what stories could they tell. Got to say I do like to browse in the graveyards when hubby goes to work in the churches:-) hugs Jan xx

World of the unknown--world of lives gone by--we all have to ponder the silence that speaks loudly of the inevitable. Splendid exploration, Deb.
