An Imminent Summer Storm
The sun explodes through a ragged crack
ripped in the clouds by rolling thunder.
Exploding, battering overhead
as if to pull the world asunder.
Heat lightning flames in the distant sky.
Count the seconds with a guarded dread
in order to calculate how soon
the storm will be roiling overhead.
A circling, spreading bank of clouds
is butting heads to gain dominion.
The ultimate winner of the fight
Is still a matter of opinion.
The calm before the oncoming storm
has appeared as if it knows its cue.
Most times I like a good Summer storm
But I hope this one passes on through.
