An Apercu of a Great Man

Of deep importance to him,
Blessed John Baptist Scalabrini,
Caught the whiff of the Almighty God
To lead his people back to faith.

Accoutred with moral force,
Courage and mutual support,
He moved forward to embrace
The pilgrim church on the road.

Restrictions afflicted his role,
To bring the Gospel across cultures
But he prayed and travelled,
Sowed the seeds of his noble foundation.

Missionaries of St Charles, the name
He gave to his religious congregation
Willing follow the ideals of discipleship
Especially to migrants around the globe.

In a society ravaged by poverty,
Oppression, violence and exploitations,
he proclaimed that liberation
Can happen and be possible.

As he bemoaned his pilgrimage
With halts, culs-de-sac and blisters,
he continued to walk with people
With his vision and love for the poor.

Known to every member of his order
Is his covenant fideltiy to migrant people
He held up to his followers
Authentic models of diverse missions.

Now, come and join us to hail him
As his name echoes elsewhere
We recognise him as our great Founder,
Apostle and Father to the Migrant People.

Blessed John Baptist Scalabrini
Whose odour of holiness prevails
Here on earth we rejoice
For your triumphant entry to sanctity.
