Alone With My Friend
By myself, at the end of the dock
My place to think and be alone
Night is young, I wait for the stars
The first one I see, I call my own
The lake itself is almost asleep
it's waters becoming a dark mirror
Tiny little flutters of dragonfly wings
is the only sound that I hear
My dog's head softly on my lap
She senses what is in my soul
I love the feel of her gentle calm
It makes my heart feel whole
I close my eyes, I feel her warmth
My closest friend at my side
Loving me inspite of all my faults
Never uncomfortable when I've cried
The stars are now covering the sky
a sequinned cape of black
My private star shines like a beacon
Reminding me it's time to head back
We stand, I bend and hug her neck
She softly licks my hand
She knows I'm very much at peace
Which is exactly what she planned
