Notes About The Poem

8/31/2025 for OXYMORON Poetry Contest sponsored by Nette Onclaud

Alone in a Crowd

Striding through the carnival crowd,
a man alone, not seen or heard,
watching folks, boisterous and loud,
I'm happy not saying a word.

Life is a carnival, they say.
In the bustling throng, on my own,
strangely, I'm more than just okay -
I feel comfortable, alone.

OK, this was my choice and I, too, was planning on being alone at a carnival, just not happy about it. Now I need to figure out where else I could go to be unhappy!!!! Where else, sports, but watching game, ummm, I got nothing else right now. Oh, I could be lonely at a swimming pool but not the beach. That helps, thanks. Yours is a great read, well done, David. hmm, I'll have to find out where you picked to be alone. Maybe a big empty sports stadium, or a spaceship. I remember the words to a long, "lonelier than a parkiing lot when the last car has pulled away".

I hear ya... Wonder if that non-lonely feeling is at least partly due to the pathetic nature of the average carny crowd. ~ Yar D. Barker

Yup, in reality, if I were at a carnival right now, I'd probably be scoping out all the food and making myself sick.

I'm quite okay being alone....sometimes I crave the solitude....something comforting about it...perhaps all those years of teaching high school finally got to me :-) Nicely penned! best wishes with the contest.

Haha, yep, I could see that, teaching could get pretty hectic. I think I'm the ultimate introvert, which I somewhere read or heard, is one who gains his energy from being alone.

A restful thought. I liked this idea.
