Allegiance

Allegiance

Do you know how much I love you?
It is so hard for me to explain
But I would like to tell you
And perhaps ease this aching pain.

You know I have to go
There is no other way
But I will always love you
I promise…. until my dying day.

You will have my child
What could be better than that?
I pray with all my heart and soul
That I will get to come back.

I go to serve my country
At times not even sure why
But like many others I say
We go….. even if we die.

So many of us have already gone
Some have even come back
Messed up in the head or injured
Some gone from enemy attack.

That is the price of freedom
There are so many of us who care
And our allegiance to God and country
Is the reason we are there.

This poem is so realistic, relating the pain of parting and the call of duty with clarity. I also love your resounding ending!
