All In A Morning
wee coastal walk where we can watch big ships
between near and far land over the sea
look up, low and high flyers, vapour trails
cloudy sky opens to the blue beyond
diving birds emerge, silver sprats in beak
yaught stays tinkle, clinking crescendo shrill
canoes assemble, schooling shoreline trips
mooring buoys are bobbling, windward to lee
mariners wrestle down their flapping sails
swivel-head seals look about, fish abscond
erratic wind shifts, sheltered spots to seek
determined swimmers glow with warming chill
young and old paddle on the tidal edge
plunging dogs, owners of every size
hot steaming tea slurped with a sticky bun
grumpy chat below weather escaping
demeanours scowling, some stretch to a grin
philosophic wise cracks surface the wall
hunkered seagulls shuffle along the ledge
hoods hide faces, inconvenient truth from lies
rolators and zimmers, slow zig-zag fun
pier-end kids, hand-held lines, some are vaping
detritus and garbage surround the bin
hoping no one looks, crabs from buckets crawl
morning idyll but not to be this day
dysfunctionals have been seen down the road
out and about from tower of babel land
pogroms promoted they are unopposed
fomented fear, the mob still craves a foe
dumb vigilantes seek friends to our shore
or feathered ones in the park, games to play
their brains are too big, such a heavy load
deprived delinquents, too much time on hand
rip off their frightened masks, leave them exposed
behind the barricades, nowhere to go
charge the guilty, pin them down, deeds deplore
just products of thugs and their history
unsocial media, dumb algorithms
wayward parents and pitiful leaders
defensive minds building bonfires burning
not seeing beyond pallets and steeples
grounded by fog and fear, they do not care
old songs limit, few tunes of mystery
unenquiring minds and distorting schisms
for new ideas there are no readers
slow thinkers require corrective learning
dullards retreat before incoming peoples
many melanin shades and twists of hair
fortune mis-steps and then there’s another
falling asleep while my loved one tumbles
reaching break-neck speed, hear audible crack!
new pain now enters her confusing world
she looks up at me, my beauty battered
she squeezes my hand hard until it hurts
her frightened wide eyes strain to discover
reality rifts through murmured mumbles
so full of guilt and shame, I want her back
but then she smiles, gripping fingers uncurled
somewhere in there but so very scattered
inner turmoil stalking and still she flirts
