Age Is Not
Age is not...
Age is not the cracks in rock,
or the wear and tear from working.
Age isn't a body bent or breaking
from long days in the saddle, hurting.
Age is not the days in the shop
or frail bones that don't bounce no more.
Nor is it remembering who you saw
in the mirror 25 years ago.
Not a faded picture, dental fixtures,
unsolicited sleeping sounds
or white hairs on your crown.
Not a missing finger,
missing teeth, abounding scars,
Aches and pains or joints ajar.
Not preferences for 'past tenses'
lamenting on broken fences
and young horseback adventures,
Or growin disenchanted
For cold and rainy weather
thirst and hunger
or for sleeping under stars.
Instead,
What if an older man, is still a young man
by way of what he knows
versus what he regrets.
Then,
By these same stackings,
those old timers we look up to
ain't even been born yet.
And then,
by way of this thinking
aging is only a changing
that happens when you believe what they're saying
And forget
who from day 1 you've always been.
