Notes About The Poem

Author's Notes: "About Fear" covers some key ideas and reflections I have at a higher-level concerning this particularly dark emotion. This new couplet poem is not meant to be all-inclusive from the standpoint of "Fear" and the vast array of all of its possible aspects. Rather, I have tried to focus on some of the principal notions of what it actually is, and how it can affect the human psyche and even the soul in a destructive way. There is certainly much to unwrap with this concept beyond the parameters of this poem. (Gary Bateman - November 28, 2018) (Couplet)

About Fear

About Fear

Fear is a horrid emotion that makes one attentive at once,
whilst shocking the heart to beat hard—fast and faster!

It causes an ill-feeling and a sense of terrible foreboding,
which can instantly provoke some unintended responses.

Fear has its own unique spirit that can paralyze us cold,
whilst clouding our judgment and inciting a raw rage.

It has that lurking quality in the shadows of the mind,
that can spark moments of terror and abject uncertainty.

Fear possesses a ghastly aura that shows no mercy and
can engulf and literally devour the depths of one’s soul.

The only solution, if indeed there is one, is to resist fear’s
evil to the uttermost before your soul is destroyed forever!

Fear attacks as often as it can and if we can learn to block it or ignore it with faith; it weakens a bit. Imagine if we all achieved that goal! A wonderful poem. I try to get over to your poetry whenever I can. Your poetry is always marvelous to read. What you mention about "fear" is spot-on. It must be educated. Fear can be used by some to frighten and torment others as a weaponized tool for cruelty and debasement, which is despicable, of course.
