A ways to go
Ever heard the wind blow
In the middle of the night?
And watch the moon fade from view,
Taking with it all its light?
Then wake in the morning
Underneath a sky of gray,
Wishing you'd held on to dreams
Which have long drifted far away.
Have you looked down that path
Which seems to fade 'round the bend,
Wond'ring if you just might
Take it to the journey's end?
Though it be just one step
That takes you from where you stand,
Doubts and fears take control
Over all that's left unplanned.
Yesterdays linger on,
There, between every thought;
Sometimes it gets so hard
To know what is real or not.
You can sense the shadows
Which follow so close behind,
Echoing what's been said,
Playing games within your mind.
In the end, looking back,
Can you count the bridges crossed?
Those youthful pictures fade
Hand in hand with the melting frost.
And though days grow weary,
There's something you've come to know:
Though the time is fleeting,
You've still got a ways to go.
