A Waiting Path

Many children, likely most,
Don’t have the slightest clue
Of how their grown-up selves will be
Or what they’d like to do.

The childhood years, in school and camp,
Will open many eyes
And steer some in directions
That might startle or surprise.

Yet there are those who, very young,
Can see a waiting path,
Who know exactly what they want
And figure out the math

To get them ready to embark,
With tools that they might need,
In hopes that they will have support
And that they will succeed.

It’s satisfying when I read
Or hear of someone who
Accomplished what, in childhood,
Was the future that he knew.

Some kids 'just know.' Others, like me, know but deny. E.g., I knew I wanted to be a teacher at age 6. But it wasn't 'manly' enough. It wasn't 'prestigious' enough. I'd never be 'rich.' So not until 40, did I wake up and start applying for teacher jobs. Took me 14 months to land something by then. But I did, and taught for 29 years. Lucky me.

Too bad that you weren’t able to follow through initially, but how wonderful that you acted on it later on and had many years to reap the benefits! Good for you, Gershon!

Yes it is, Anne-Lise! It doesn’t happen nearly as much as it should, though, for various reasons that sometimes can’t be controlled…
