A Voice On the Phone

What a night this has been so far.
Lots of folks getting home from a bar
or just feeling lost in the human sea.
But for God's grace that could be me.

I have been where they are now.
So I try to offer guidance somehow.
I answer with a voice that's calm
hoping tonight I can be a balm.

They tell me their troubles,I quietly listen.
On my cheek I feel a tear glisten.
So many times a nerve is struck
when I hear a tale of someone's sad luck.

I ask a few questions,encouragement I give
trying to convince them it's worth it to live.
In their time of crisis I'm reason's voice
explaining to them they have a choice.

When I finally hang up I sit and wonder
did they just tear my words asunder?
Or did my spirit change their mind.
Did I help them at all by being kind?

This job is tough but rewarding too.
Once in awhile you know you got through.
To save a life it's all worthwhile
knowing that maybe tomorrow they'll smile.
