Etsi deus non daretur: As if there were no God
A Question of Belief (Part 1) I stand where silence meets the sky And ask for more than words passed by Not echoes borne through ancient years But something clear that calms my fears For faith, they say, must light the way Yet doubt still asks in nighttime fray If truth is vast and meant for all Why speak so faint, why hide so small I do not ask for oceans to be split Nor thunder cast where lamps are lit But only this a sign made plain Enough to rise above the pain For hearts are bound to what they know To what is seen, to what can show And if belief must shape our fate Let truth arrive before too late So here I wait, with open mind The objective truth I hope to find Between the dark, between the light I search for reason in my plight Questions of Knowing (Part 2) If all we are is breath and bone How do we claim truths not our own If all we are is matter and motion What’s with all the commotion We speak of love, of right, what’s true Yet ask what Weltanschauung gives meaning to If thought is bound in molded clay Why trust the laws that guide our way And if no greater source is near What grounds the things we hold most clear Through the world, through sense and sky We ask what truth can justify Beyond ourselves, beyond our frame We search the Root from which truth came And even simpler, we look to favor The best explanation is Occam’s Razor Resolution: Do we believe “Etsi Deus non daretur” If God does not exist, how do we know for sure?
