A Soldiers Story

He went overseas to protect our opportunity for a free life,
He did his duty to God and country,
No matter how intense the threat became.
Having to do things that violated his strongest values,
All the while seeing and trying to contain a pure evil unruly.
Although he is back to our homeland safe,
His mind and soul will forever relive,
The horror and the bloodshed,
He still sees the blood on his hands,
He still hears the gun fire,
But most of all he still feels the pain.
Everyday he counts his blessings.
Everyday he thanks God above,
For the chance to wake with his wife,
To play with his sons,
And to see his friends and peers thrive,
On the freedom he helped provide.
