A Soldier's Mother

With wrinkled cheeks, with tearful eyes,
The frail old woman stares in space.
Distress and anguish fill her face;
Aggrieved and heavy are her sighs.

Her only son has died in fight
And her dear husband is long dead.
She feels no urge to look ahead;
There is no solace to her plight.

The feeble hand clenches the cane.
Such unfair dice were rolled and tossed!
A sea of tears she has now crossed,
Yet many more alas remain.

Though she draws breath, she lives no more,
And wonders hopelessly why those
Who rule the country ever chose
To stab her heart for want of war.
