A Scottish Tradegy

Douglas Moffatt went to Dumfries To try to find some work Though he didn't have a job He had never been known to shirk There he saw Mary Port A very pretty girl Whose lovely smile delighted him And set his mind all in a whirl They stepped out together hand in hand Mary Port and he Then one day with a smile and a kiss She invited him home for tea There he met her sister Who took him aside She said Mary had a suitor She was promised as his bride The suitors name was Clarence Field A very nasty man She said “If he find out about you He will kill you if he can” Douglas didn't care at all Mary was his love He swore that he would marry her He swore by the Lord above But Clarence Field sought him out He challenged him to fight A duel with weapons of his choice To take place that very night Douglas he chose pistols He wasn't going to yield So that night they faced each other At ten paces in a field Just as they cocked their pistols They heard Mary shout out “stop !” She jumped in between them But too late and she was shot A single bullet pierced her heart And as she lay on the ground She whispered “I love you both” As the people gathered round The two men looked at each other and both of them cried As their tears began to fall Mary sadly died

Wouldn’t have happened in a polyamorous society! Enjoyed the way you spun the tale, Denis, so well crafted!
