A Sad Time and an Awful War

I was from a poor rural county in Iowa
The kind that drafts young men during wars
Back in the late sixties many of our men went to Viet Nam
Some did not return, others returned damaged

Patriots, doing their duty, representing the USA.
Some of us thought so too, we did not understand
How horrible war is, or what it will do to a young man
Soldiers should have been respected and revered upon their return

Instead they were name-called and put down.
The average age of the eager-to-lease recruits was eighteen
A war that was misunderstood , a war that angered people at home.
One of the saddest wars that ever happened to our country.

Indeed, war is an ugly, wasteful thing, but sadly, sometimes a necessary evil thing. I agree most young people do not understand how horrible is war!
