A rewrite of A Father and Grandfather’s Prayer

O Father of mercy, my Maker, my Light,
Speak to my children in the stillness of night.
In the fourth watch, before their day begins,
Whisper Your truth to their hearts deep within.

As they rise and walk through the hours ahead,
Surround them with saints whose spirits are led—
Elders with wisdom, youth burning bright,
All walking in love, all shining Your light.

Let their memory hold what the world tries to steal:
The cross where Christ died, make His love feel real.
Let that truth echo in their soul’s every part—
The reason He suffered was to win their heart.

And Lord, when their image comes into my view,
Let it stir up a prayer, so I’ll cry unto You.
Convict me so gently, please keep me aligned,
When my flesh grows weary and faith feels confined.

You’ve called me, Lord, as father and seer,
A watchman in prayer for those I hold dear.
Sixty-seven years now, You’ve carried me through,
Forty of them in covenant, walking with You.

Through tears and trials, Your Word has remained—
Faithful and true, through joy and through pain.
Now I plead: that they know You more than I do,
Let their hearts be anchored in all that is true.

Draw them, Lord, to my pages and posts,
Where my failures and lessons can serve as a host—
A mirror of grace, a guide through the flame,
To walk with You boldly, unshaken, unashamed.

Teach them, O God, through Your holy command:
Cursed is the one who trusts in mere man.
But blessed are those who lean on Your name,
For in Jesus alone is the victory to claim!

So for every child, and each grandchild to be,
I lift up this prayer on bended knee.
Let Your Spirit pursue them, Your mercy remain—
And seal them forever in Jesus’ name.
Amen.
