A Quiet, Stubborn Truth

I know we’ve turned the page and closed the book.
The final line is written, plain to see.
But still, some words of yours get in my head,
Like a melody that won't let me be.

My heart has rooms that sigh with dust,
Of ashes in a long-extinguished hearth.
I should sweep clean, let go, as good folks must,
But even dust is dear—for what it's worth.

I find your shadow waiting at the door,
And know it is but memory, just air.
I've new stories now, and yet what came before
Still holds a cruel and bittersweet affair.

But I know you still like me, and that's the thing,
And I like you too, a quiet, stubborn truth.
It's just a ghost that lingers in the cracks,
Trapped in these silent, broken, separate tracks.
