A Poor Boy's Christmas
A POOR BOY’S CHRISTMAS
There was a poor boy in a town not very far away
Who went to bed one Chrisrtmas Eve and he began to pray,
“I know, dear Lord, that I am poor, my family’s poor, too,
So I’m not asking much tonight, just one small thing from You:
When I wake up tomorrow morn, just one thing could I see?
One present placed there to unwrap there at my Christmas tree?
It doesn’t need to cost a lot and be a special toy,
Just something special for this year for such a little boy.
I know my family is poor, this year has been so bad,
My father had missed work a lot and it made Mother sad.
She did her best to manage things and somehow we got through,
I know, dear Lord, without a doubt it was because of You.
So as I lay me down to sleep, I hope You understand,
Whatever is beneath our tree is something that You planned.”
And so the boy fell fast asleep, and as he dreamed there so
About what might be at that tree, he really did not know.
He woke up Christmas morn to rush out to the Christmas tree
And tears did fill his eyes right then as something there did see:
It was a simple manger scene, with three small figures there:
A woman and a man looked on at a baby with such care.
The little boy knew right away, for he’d heard someone say,
“The best gift that you’ll ever get was sent to earth one day.
He came from heaven just for you to give to you a place
Far better than your humble home and through His wondrous grace.
If you will trust in Jesus, son, you’ll have eternal life,
Forever more to dwell with Him and free from all your strife.”
He’d trusted in the Lord that year as best as he knew how,
So as he sat there by the tree, he was so happy now.
The manger scene there to look on, though not with pretty bow
Reminded that poor boy again with something great to know:
Though he was just a little boy and poor there in that place,
He had the best gift of his life: forgiveness through God’s grace!
Yes, we could learn a lot this year from that poor little lad:
If we, too, have received that gift, ‘tis the best we ever had!
