A Pet For Christmas
Excited, expecting a new arrival, a new pet,
being an eight year old boy an animal lover,
father arrives box in hand, I greet him full
of anticipation, we walk down the garden
to the ready made pen, then to my delight
he released the most beautiful pink piglet,
it was late November so I named him winter,
every day I would feed him and clean winters pen,
Christmas day I awoke to church bells ringing
and many presents which were hurriedly opened,
my thoughts were to wish winter a happy Christmas,
on arriving at winters pen he wasn’t there to meet
me, with concern I ran to tell my mother who
was busy in the kitchen that winter was missing,
with a tear in her eye she said winter has gone
to a better place and will not be coming back,
I cried but for my families sake I needed to
put on a brave face, for it was Christmas Day,
we all sat down to eat Christmas dinner to
my amazement we didn’t have turkey this year,
then I realized it was pork.
