A Peaceful Haunting

Do you think of me?
Early in the morning when you open your eyes
And look out the window to see the sunshine
Because it reminds you of my ways
To bring light to you in your moments of sadness
Do you think of me and remember that you once had this?

Do you think of me?
When you roll over in bed dreading getting up
As you drag yourself to the kitchen to pour hot coffee in your cup
You watch the steam rise
And try to push back the mornings you and I woke together
Do you think of me and feel weighted down by the pressure?

Do you think of me?
When you pick out the wrinkled clothes from your top drawer
As you slide your shirt over your face and smell my phantom perfume once more
Close your eyes and breathe it in
A perfect memory of the right place in time
Do you think of me and feel haunted by the memories of you and I?

Do you think of me?
When the silent times of your day come around
As you’re left with nothing but the loud thoughts of me now
Your heartbeat increases, but your breaths slow
You feel me standing in front of you, but it’s never real
Do you think of me and ache for the tense calming only I could make you feel?

Do you think of me?
When you step inside and stumble over your words
Working yourself up and never admitting it hurts
Slam your hands on the counter and struggle to look at your reflection
You see the paleness of your face and feel the coldness of your skin
Do you think of me when you realize you’ll never be whole again?

Do you think of me?
When you adjust the temperature of the water and never get it right
As you make it colder to rid your thoughts of me, you purposely give up the fight
It sends shivers down your spine
You’re at war with a lingering ghost and it’s bittersweet
Do you think of me when you’re head to toe drowning in defeat?

Do you think of me?
When you lay down in bed and cover yourself lightly
As sheets smother you in regret, you’re ok because this happens nightly
You are finding some comfort in your shadows of me
You lay still and breathe in rhythm with my haunted breaths
Do you think of me and realize phantoms are all you have left?

Do you think of me?
As you stare out the window and into the dark
Wondering how, without me, you’ve made it this far
Your eyes get heavy
And you say goodbye to this day’s thoughts of us, only to start dreaming
Do you think of me and feel a tortured relief that I’ll never be leaving?

I really loved the emotion—it has a sincerity that lingers. There were moments that gently reminded me of the feeling behind “Song Sung Blue” and “Killing Me Softly,” with that same quiet, reflective resonance that draws the reader in rather than demands attention. Interestingly, it was flagged as having a rhyme scheme, but that didn’t stand out to me. If anything, the flow felt natural and unforced prose, more like it was guided by feeling than by structure—which I think works beautifully here. There’s something genuine in what you’ve written, and that’s not easy to achieve. It stayed with me, and I appreciate that.
