A New Crossing For Us All

Setting out cross country when this land was new,
Was such an adventure and sometimes dangerous thing to do.
Sometimes it was necessary and the only way some folks could get ahead,
Most times they were just pipe dreams of journeys that some had read.

Hardly ever were they told of all the dangers along the way,
Wild animals, Indians, snakes, harsh weather, deserts, no water, I could go on all day.
Usually when they got started, they had invested too much to turn back,
It was make it or break it, as the wagons laid down their tracks.

As they made their way cross lands that were fertile and rich,
For destinations unknown, or till they found the cure for their itch.
Many a man’s, woman’s, and child’s bones are buried alone by the trail,
As they pushed on forward intent on surviving this hell.

These were our forefathers, not really so different than you or me,
They hurt, they suffered, they bled, but it didn’t matter as long as they were free.
Cause freedom is like a spirit, once it is tasted it can never be quelled,
And all those bodies that were left are testimonies that our freedom prevailed.

Their spirits still live in search of freedom for all,
It’s the American way and no sacrifice was too small.
Right now we are kind of like those old settlers we are having it rough,
Nothing worth while ever comes easy, and what don’t kill you will sure make you tough.

You are an amazing writer. An incredible written poetic story of our history and you rhymed so beautifully. Love the ending verse, and especially agree with that very last line. Thanks for your comment on my poem, it made me giggle out loud! Love, Shar

It seems that people have gotten soft over the years....we don't even know the meaning of hardship like the times of our forefathers. What they stuggled through and fought for, we can't even imagine. And if it weren't for them...where would we be now? Well done, Ronald! ~ Carrie

Amen to that brother. At least they tried. I hate to see so many just sitting doing nothing. I feel like Jesus..when he told them..get up...take up your bed and walk...It appears that it is so much easier to lie there and beg. Great write. I love the imagery in this. It took me back to the western movies.

Gosh Ron I don't know about you but I think they made 'em a lot tougher back then. My 85 year old mom could run circles around me with one arm tied behind her back. I believe as you said though we share the spirit.
