Although I cannot hear your sound,
I feel you must be hanging 'round
as I grow old.
I can't fool myself or pretend.
You don't compromise or bend
when it's time for me to end.
Why are you so cold?
You're like a woman in a fantasy
I think about but never see.
Through hardship and strife,
at times you offered me relief,
escape from pain and grief,
and though you're a heartless thief,
you wouldn't take my life.
The time, now near, I have no choice,
I listen, but I don't hear your voice,
lying quiet and still.
Will you inundate me with fear
or comfort me like a teddy bear?
I only feel, as I disappear,
a momentary chill.
