A Love Supreme
(“Dragon’s Eye”, 2024, original encaustic)
Everyone has some connection to the source,
Call it what you will,
No matter how tenuous.
I’m pretty sure it’s a connection
That can never really be broken
But can for sure wax and wane
Depending on what we do.
Since it is the source
I call it Supreme, and our connection is the love.
Since we’re limited and highly selfish humans
We sometimes lose perspective
And think we are supreme, or at least our tribe is.
But this is just a reflection of that deeper connection.
In our limited perspective
We see our accomplishments and rejoice.
And in this there is nothing wrong.
We also think with excessive pride
This makes us special,
And it does,
But no more so than other accomplishments.
Other species have their talents
Just as other individuals, tribes and races do,
And yet we consider our’s supreme.
Every species, subspecies and race
Does this, as it’s only natural
Given our limited view.
We all, after all, have that connection,
Call it what you will,
And that connection fills us with love
For whatever we focus on.
Only hypocrites complain
About another’s misguided sense of supremacy
Thinking somehow it diminishes them.
The wise know we are all the same
In our foolishness
And yet don’t lose sight
Of what can only be felt
As a Love Supreme.
